How to limit Instagram screen time

Keep the DMs, lose the 90-minute Reels holes.

Most people don't want to delete Instagram — they want the version of it that doesn't eat an evening. To limit Instagram screen time in a way that holds, you need three things: an honest number, a real barrier, and a kind exit.

Step 1: Get your honest number

Settings → Screen Time → See All App & Website Activity → tap Instagram. Look at the daily average and when the time happens. For most people it's not the daytime check-ins — it's one or two long Reels sessions after 10pm. That's your target, not "Instagram" in general.

Step 2: Know why Instagram's own tools fail

Instagram's in-app "Daily Limit" and iOS's App Limits both end in a dismissible nudge — Ignore Limit is always one tap away. A limit you can dismiss without thinking isn't a limit; it's a decoration. The fix isn't a bigger wall — it's a different kind of door.

Step 3: Gate the door with a conscious action

Behavioral research on friction is consistent: requiring one deliberate action (typing something, waiting a beat, answering a question) cuts compulsive opens far more than warnings do. The action needs to be light enough that you don't rage-quit the system, heavy enough that autopilot can't do it.

Limiting Instagram with Lumi

  1. Create an Instagram blocker scheduled for your problem window (say 9pm–8am), using Apple's system-level Screen Time shield.
  2. Opening Instagram in that window shows Lumi — dimmed, with an affirmation instead of a feed.
  3. Unlock consciously: read, type, or trace the line and choose your minutes. The window closes on its own; the shield returns without drama.
  4. Watch the payoff: your reclaimed minutes feed Lumi's light and your streak — with a freeze in reserve so one slip doesn't zero you out.

You keep Instagram. You lose the part where "one story" becomes an hour of somebody else's life.
